What makes a Photograph?

Photograph is made using the following:

Exposure

Exposure can be controlled using the following

ISO - increases of decreases the sensitivity of image sensor.
Shutter Speed - Decides the duration of time image sensor is exposed to light.
Aperture - This decides how much of light image sensor receives for whatever duration it is exposed to.
Metering - This will help you decide the exposure of the entire image or the subject in the picture.

Focus

Focus can be controlled using the following

Focus ring on the lens to manually adjust the focus as per your requirement.
Auto-Focus on the camera - but here the camera decides what should be in focus. Not a bad idea, but for instances you need full control its better to focus manually.

Aperture

It's referred to as depth of field. We will learn how to make use of this to better focus.

Shutter Speed

This can help with reduced blurring and sharper images or vice versa, as the situation demands.

Lighting conditions

Although we can control the light entering the camera using some of the settings mentioned above. It is important to know the lighting conditions.
Shutter speed, Aperture and ISO is changed depending on the available lighting.
For special needs we can also add more light.

In the posts that will follow I will be explaining all these aspects with pictures of my own. Hopefully that will help you understand how to click a picture.

  1. Good to know. I am a little confused on the metering part of a camera operation. Looking forward to that article
